First picture of the bumper tucked E28 with a fresh svend for your time.
OK, the problem - my 4th grade twin boys are inundated with chat s and calls almost all day yesterday, even during “class” time. Now I’m not naïve , I’ m sure they are part of the problem, but either way it is extremely distracting.
Any parents or teachers know how I can disable the chat functionality completely? Right now I don’t see any reason they need it at all.
What I have done is tell them to turn their status to “Do Not Disturb ” when they are in class, but that is only a band aid. And I don’t think 9 and 10 year old boys are fully capable of appropriately using chat during the learning day.
Any help is appreciated.

I’ve always liked the look of the American bumpers on that area of Beamer.
Are you talking about their phones? Maybe lock them in a Faraday bag for parts of the day? Or are they on Discord? It would probably not be difficult to set up a parental lock that blocked Discord. Maybe set a schedule that allows for breaks during the day where they get to have their phones and you unblock Discord.
I’m an educator myself, but my own children are grown. For my part, I am enjoying Zoom school with my middle school students. Much tougher for the younger ones.
Let me know what you come up with.

No, they are using Micro soft Teams on a Windows Laptop to join classes and track school work. Teams has a built in chat feature (which makes sense), but my 10 year old boys ( and their friends ) are not yet mature enough to use it responsibly.
I already turned off banner notifications, and the status of “Do Not Disturb” works ok, but their friends already figured out some way around that (I think making the chat “urgent”).

Chat can’t be disabled by individual users, the best you can do is turn off all notifications using the settings.

That is what I had found with my own searches, I was hoping there was some secret way. Thanks.

The system our district is using doesn’t have a chat feature, so my boys are just using their phones or Discord instead.

Microsoft Teams instead of Zoom or Google Meets? I know that in Zoom, the host can disable private chatting. Good luck!

Yep, not sure why, but Teams for most things.

Ugh, fine. Just go ahead and remind me why Round Rock is better than Houston. :)

I’m currently abusing my contacts at Microsoft on behalf of my employer, I’ll see if they know anything about this.

Appreciate it, thanks.

Not that I’m aware of, as much as I like teams, I can see it’s numerous features being a huge distraction for a child. It has a gif library and a make your own meme template.

Yeah, and 10 year old boys have already found the gif library.
FYI - nuts are HILARIOUS when you are a pre-adolescent boy.

I believe that the admin on the host’s account can configure those sorts of things (chat off, one way chat etc...) I will have a look at my admin options, we don’ t have anything locked down except needing a password.

Individuals can’t disable chat for a Teams meeting. The owner of the meeting can set it up without chat, or the administrator of the account can disable chat. However, there isn’t much individual users can do. You can mute the chat so that you don’t get notifications, but kids will find a way around that.
There is no secret way to disable it. The best you can do is to ask the school district to turn off chat and as students to use the “raise your hand” feature instead. This may require the teachers to cancel their current meetings and set up a new set of meetings. My son’s teachers had to do this to update meeting settings after the first week of school. High school kids are just as willing to abuse the chat features as 4th graders.

T he teacher should be able to block chat for all the kids in his/her class.
If the teacher can’t do it, the IT department may have to enable that feature for the teachers.

Full disclosure - I work for Microsoft. I’m a product safety engineer for the hardware group, so I don’t specifically work on the software products. However, I get the Teams updates with the new features months before the general public does.

Thanks. I don’t want to add that request to the teacher’s queue on the first week of school, I’m sure they have plenty on their plate right now.
We will see how the week plays out, then make the request next week if needed.

The teacher may not realize it and taking control of the chat may help the teacher take control of the class. Just something to think about.
